The team acquires a major piece of equipment

25 August 2025 – The research team has acquired a state-of-the-art low-frequency sound projector for underwater studies: the C-BASS M72-50, manufactured by GeoSpectrum Technologies Inc. (Canada). This instrument is capable of reproducing single and combined tones, frequency-modulated sweeps, communication signals, as well as white or shaped noise at high intensity.

The projector will be used to expose marine organisms to the very low-frequency components of anthropogenic noise, such as those generated by offshore wind farms, shipping traffic, and other human activities. The M72-50 enhances the team’s specialized platform for studying the impacts of underwater noise on marine life, which already includes a 3D particle motion sensor and the C-BASS M72-110.

Equipped with this advanced technology, the team will be able to generate new insights into how marine animals, from microscopic plankton to larger fish, detect, respond to, and use low-frequency sounds for orientation, migration, and communication.
